The CSS Neuse was a Confederate Ironclad stationed in Kinston, North Carolina. Today, it is one of a few surviving commissioned Confederate Ironclads, and is forgotten by many due to its lack of significant military history. While the ship does not have an extensive military background, its recent history is interesting and complex. This research is a multidisciplinary analysis of the ship's excavation, conservation, and display. The Neuse is a testament to the importance of cooperation between archaeologist, conservators, and museum professionals. During its original excavation, the ship sustained damage that affected the future conservation of the wooden hull. Also, since conservation was in its infancy during the time of the excavation, treatments were experimental. This research seeks to understand the full history and condition of the ship and associated artifacts in order to effectively preserve and display them for the future. Chemical analysis was employed to determine effectiveness of past treatments as well as levels of degradation, and recommendations were included regarding future conservation treatments. The Neuse is an important piece of North Carolina material culture, and an understanding of effective conservation is essential to the life and future display of the ship. Â

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest, largest, and most complex military action of the Second World War. The battle involved Allied, Axis, and neutral nations, resulting in both military and civilian casualties. At various times throughout the battle certain areas became centers of activity. One such focal point occurred off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, between January and July of 1942. During this time, several oceanographic, geographic, bathymetric, meteorological, and strategic factors converged and turned the waters off North Carolina's Outer Banks into a battlefield.  Using a particular convoy battle, the U-boat attack on Allied convoy KS-520 (15 July 1942) as a case study, this thesis seeks to adapt terrestrial battlefield survey techniques to analyze a naval engagement. Drawing from the dominant theoretical and methodological framework utilized by the United States Department of the Interior's American Battlefield Protection Program, the present study seeks to supplement this framework with the broader application of military science. It is hoped this modification will facilitate greater exploration of anthropological questions in addition to generating an adapted naval battlefield analysis technique capable of conducting similar anthropological inquiry of other Battle of the Atlantic engagements. Â

Tryon Palace was home to the first royal governors of North Carolina. Today, the site is one of the most visited historic sites in the state. But what stories are visitors hearing? The historic homes and buildings at the site display local history but African Americans have only recently penetrated the interpretation.   This thesis acknowledges the difficulties of displaying topics that are sensitive and emotional for many audiences while investigating the tremendous amount of African American history surrounding Tryon Palace. The town of New Bern, NC has always maintained a diverse population and African Americans have played a significant role in the town's history. Yet many are unfamiliar with this complex and unique story. This history both parallels and intersects with Tryon Palace in different eras.   Using various primary and secondary sources, this thesis serves as a case study on how local African American history is interpreted at historic sites and museums. Much of the changes can be attributed to the African American Research Project, which was implemented in 1999. This endeavor created programs that brought African American history to the forefront of Tryon Palace's interpretation. Â

This thesis explores the formation of a state in Anglo-Saxon England from the period of Roman withdrawal from Britain in the early fifth century to the tenth century. It argues that the key factor in the development of the state was the increase in the power of kings during the period. While early kings in England were little more than the leaders of warbands numbering in the dozens rather than armies numbering in the thousands, later kings acquired various forms of power that allowed them to exert greater control over their territories, increase the size of their kingdoms through conquest, and, by the time of Alfred the Great (r. 871-899), claim kingship over all of the Anglo-Saxons.  The thesis first examines two theoretical questions: "What is power?" and "What is the state?" Following the direction of sociologist Michael Mann, the thesis posits that there are four types of social power: ideological, military, economic, and political. The thesis then attempts not to define the state precisely, but to provide a series of general characteristics that typify a state level of society. The state is a stratified, hierarchical political system -- usually with three or more levels within its hierarchy -- that breaks up regional and local loyalty and often integrates multi-ethnic (or at least somewhat diverse) populations into a single unified polity. The state also features a system of lasting, impersonal institutions, has the power to tax, and, as Max Weber says, enjoys a monopoly on violence. The remainder of the thesis examines Anglo-Saxon kings' military, economic, and ideological power, and discusses how facets of each of these concepts contributed to the creation of a state in England during the early medieval period. Â

USS North Carolina, a World War II battleship, which received 12 battle stars during its career, was turned into a memorial and museum in 1961 after it was decommissioned. Since then, the museum has told the story of World War II and life on the "Showboat" through exhibits and displays of World War II artifacts and paraphernalia. Often, museums house a much larger collection than they can display; the North Carolina Memorial is no exception. In its collection, the museum houses everything from the fanciest silver to the most innocuous papers. Many of the more ordinary objects can help tell stories of war and life to which the visitors can easily connect. This thesis focuses on part of North Carolina's story through the voices of the sailors using three "mundane" artifacts. The object biographies of seemingly unrelated objects -- in this case the Kingfisher sea sled, a vertical plotting board, and a stretcher -- showcase elements of construction, technological improvement, and inferred value. Additionally, events and people connect these seemingly unrelated artifacts. Ultimately, mundane artifacts can be related to each other and to stories shared to provide a holistic and relatable history.

The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on a Holocaust rescue effort untaken by Jose Castellanos and George Mandel. Mandel has been the subject of several publications while Castellanos' role has largely been ignored. Newly discovered certificates along with cooperation and acknowledgement from the Salvadoran government have opened the door to a deeper look into Castellanos' life and participation in the rescue. Colonel Jose Arturo Castellanos, while a diplomat for the government of El Salvador to various European countries in the 1930s, coordinated a massive effort to provide certificates of El Salvadoran citizenship throughout Europe to Jews under threat of persecution. These certificates saved the lives of countless European Jews because they conveyed El Salvadoran citizenship rights and thus prevented the deportation of Jews who held such certificates to the ghettos and concentration camps. Castellanos, along with fellow diplomat Hungarian businessman George Mandel, secretly organized and carried out this effort independent of the El Salvadoran government for whom Castellanos was working. Colonel Castellanos is celebrated by El Salvador for his humanitarian efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust, and he is the only Central American to be recognized by the state of Israel as "Righteous Among the Nations." This honor is given by Israel to non-Jews who risked their lives to help save Jews during the Holocaust. Recent evidence has shown that the rescue mission of Castellanos and Mandel was one of the most significant operations of its kind during the Holocaust and also one of the most secretive.

Before General Charles Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown in 1781, he scuttled a portion of his shipping fleet along the Yorktown riverbank to defend the town from a Franco- American amphibious attack. An environment rife with maritime material culture, the river has been subject to formal and informal salvage, including a joint effort in the 1930s by the Mariners’ Museum and the National Park Service that produced a significant artifact assemblage with minimal archaeological context. This thesis will attempt to contextualize the 1930s salvaged assemblage of York River through an artifact pattern developed from four case studies: HMS Invincible (1758), HMS Swift (1770), General Carleton (1785), and Betsy (1781). The artifact pattern presents potential archaeological distinctions between British naval and merchant vessels during the second half of the 18th century.

The decision of the United States Supreme Court in Brown v. the Board of Education legally ended the operation of segregated schools in the South. In North Carolina, a series of legal challenges began under the Pupil Assignment Act and, later, the Pearsall Plan to delay the desegregation of the state's school systems. In an effort to avoid massive public demonstrations, violence, and the closing of public schools as a result of public outrage, the Pearsall Plan transferred control of pupil assignments, along with the power to request the closing of schools, to local school boards. The decentralization of desegregation allowed communities to determine the level of social change comfortable to the majority of an area's residents. As a result, no school in any of the over one-hundred independent school systems in North Carolina lost a single day of classes on account of civil disobedience.  This thesis examines the background, development, and effect of the Pearsall Plan on North Carolina's educational, political, and social systems. It also outlines the factors that led North Carolina's leaders to deliberately embark down a path with one known ending: the declaration of the unconstitutionality of the Pearsall Plan. The decisions of these individuals and the outcome of their efforts comprise the focus of this thesis. Â

In the scope of historical events recorded by Herodotus, no event has been more pivotal in capturing the relationship between the mainland and Ionian Greeks and their enemy, and at times supporter, Persian Empire than the Ionian Revolt. The Ionian Revolt, composed of the Naxian Expedition, Ionian and Cypriot Revolts, and the Battle of Lade, was an attempt by some Ionian Greeks to overthrow Persian tyranny for their own personal despotisms. Herodotus, as an opponent of tyranny, should write this account with praise for this attempted coup. His account however is filled with disdain towards the Ionians. This aversion overshadows the Ionian Greeks' attempts to overthrow the Persian political power for an Ionian one. This political power play failed for the Ionian and mainland Greeks, but it succeeded in introducing the concept of sea power as a military strength. The use of incorporating naval power with an armed force would be instrumental in the Greeks victoriously battling the Persian Empire during the Greco-Persian Wars.

In response to the German U-boat attacks on Allied Atlantic merchant shipping during the Second World War, Ernest King, the Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet, approved construction of a defensive wall of naval mines in an area off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This configuration of mines was intended to provide a safe harbor opportunity for convoys moving along the coast. The currently accepted narrative of Cape Hatteras Minefield is that it was a failure. This assessment is due to recent scholarship which cites the loss of three Allied ships that sunk after striking mines intended for Axis watercraft. As opposed to studies of the effectiveness of offensive or defensive weapons on mobile platforms (ships, aircraft, and terrestrial vehicles) or land-based defensive structures (e.g. forts and gun emplacements), this study will seek to understand the ways in which researchers can assess the success or failure of a different kind of defensive measure -- a naval minefield. In-depth historical research will be undertaken in order to better understand the social, economic, and wartime effects of the minefield. Archaeological theories sourced from battlefield archeology will also be applied to a virtually reconstructed minefield data set created with Geographic Information System (ESRI ArcGIS). The objectives of this project are to reassess how minefields are contemplated in battlefield archeology in a naval setting as well as to reconsider the narrative of Cape Hatteras minefield itself.

In January of 1907, British Foreign Official Eyre Crowe wrote a memorandum detailing the present relations between Great Britain, France and Germany. In this memorandum, Crowe argued that war between Britain and Germany could not be avoided for long. This study examines Eyre Crowe's influence in the British Foreign Office. It argues that Crowe had significant influence in the foreign office and that he was correct with what he argued in the 1907 memorandum. Using primary documents from both the British Foreign Office and the German government, this thesis contends that the 1907 memorandum caused increased hostility towards the German Government from the British Foreign Office. This hostility made British leaders unlikely and sometimes unwilling to cooperate with the German government in a series of diplomatic events. These events included the First and Second Moroccan crises, the building of the German navy and the Baghdad railway and ultimately culminated with the July Crisis in 1914. It was what Crowe argued in his memorandum coupled with the increased hostility towards the German government that led Great Britain into entering the First World War. Â

Somerset Place was one of the largest plantations in North Carolina at the end of the Antebellum period. The owner of Somerset Place, Josiah Collins III, owned the third largest slave plantation in the state. Slaves at Somerset Place focused primarily on growing rice; however, they also grew corn, wheat, peas, and ran a saw mill. Situated on Lake Phelps, the rice fields of Somerset were regularly flooded and drained by canals that ran throughout the plantation. The type of work done by the enslaved workers put them constantly in contact with disease carrying mosquitos and stagnant water that made them ill. For this reason in 1839 Collins converted a two story slave cabin into a plantation hospital. The original structure is no longer present; however, because of its importance in the history of Somerset, a replica of the old structure was built on the modern historic site. To date, the Somerset Place historic site is the only plantation to have reconstructed a slave hospital. This thesis is a study of the health of enslaved African Americans at Somerset that were treated in the slave hospital. It argues that the conditions of slavery at Somerset Place, under the tenure of Josiah Collins III, were so deleterious to slave health that they necessitated the construction of a slave hospital which functioned with varying levels of effectiveness.

This thesis is a study of the history and use of one of Somerset Place's most notable structures, the Lake Chapel. Although no longer standing today, it was one of the most important and widely used buildings, not only by the Collins family, but also by the plantation's slave community. Situated in North Carolina's coastal plain region along Lake Phelps, Somerset Place was one of the state's largest antebellum plantations, with its Episcopal Lake Chapel membership consisting of nearly half the state's black communicants. Although not a full history, this research focuses both sharply and broadly on the Chapel at Somerset. It describes the various methods used by the Collins family to instruct the slave congregation and discusses the impact the instructions had on their disposition and attitude toward their condition. Additionally, concern is given to how the Lake Chapel fits into the larger plantation mission activities that were taking place in the larger antebellum South. Overall, Somerset Place offers a long and interior view of the lives of masters and slaves on a southern plantation. Unlike many other such places, managers here have taken great care to highlight and underscore the role of African Americans in all aspects of life on the Collins' estate. And owing to many years of research, public programs, and archaeological digs, Somerset has become one of North Carolina's most celebrated antebellum slave plantations; and it remains highly regarded as a national model of historic reconstruction, interpretation and preservation.

Passenger freight propellers were integral to the Great Lakes economy for nearly 100 years. A unique vessel type created for a unique need, shipbuilders combined different new technologies to create faster, more efficient, and more comfortable ships. This thesis explores the technical development of the passenger freight propeller using statistics, and comparisons to the historic record. Since ship design is a complex process, involving numerous considerations, multivariate linear regressions were determined to be the best fit. From these techniques, a more nuanced view of the passenger freight propeller emerged. While primary sources alone can provide important information about larger companies or maritime disasters, the ships or smaller companies were under-recorded. Utilizing ship registration data, the contribution of these smaller companies is more visible. After comparing the initial statistics, historical comparison answered some questions and provided some more. This thesis should be taken as a jumping off point for future research into this important Great Lakes ship.

This document is in support of my thesis work, a series of illustrative images. By allowing readers a closer look into my creative as well as technical processes, I hope to provide a guide to my visual artwork. I will describe the process of how I created the series of images and the environment in which they existed. My thesis exhibition consists of a visual interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, "Rappaccini's Daughter" dated 1894. The two modes of visual expression I have employed are digital illustration and installation. Digital illustration is a broad term that references the use of one or more digital tools to create images. Installation is a way of creating a focus on objects and their placement within a specific space. The intent of my thesis exhibition was to marry the final illustrations with an installation of my studio source materials as well as objects of inspiration for the final illustrations. Â

This thesis examines Hannibal Barca and his role in the Second Punic War while scrutinizing his battle tactics to gain perspective on his military campaigns. Hannibal was the first Carthaginian general known to have been educated in Greek warfare. This training coupled with his natural affinity for warfare gave him a distinct advantage because the Greeks had developed the most advanced military theories and tactics of the time. There are no extant autobiographies of Hannibal or Carthaginian works on Hannibal, which has resulted in a historiographical bias. This thesis focuses on Hannibal's battle tactics in order to present this argument in as direct and unbiased a format as possible. A reexamination of Hannibal's tactics makes dissecting the imbalance between the ancient, primary sources and modern, secondary sources possible while ultimately giving a more realistic view of Hannibal.

Montefortino helmets quickly became the dominant form of head gear throughout Europe and the Mediterranean once introduced by the Celts. During the First Punic War, it was the helmet in use by much of the Roman forces, particularly the Southern Italian and Sicilian troops, and by the numerous mercenaries employed by Carthage. Due to its widespread use, by the time of the Battle of the Egadi Islands in March of 241 B.C., it is difficult to determine the point of origin for the six bronze Montefortino helmets recovered from the battle site, as they could potentially belong to troops on either side of the conflict. This research explores what the helmet remains can reveal about the possible financial states of both Rome and Carthage at the later stages of the First Punic War, the manufacturing process, and who could have utilized the helmet during the battle.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the position of Captain of the Port of New York during World War I. This work also discusses the man who held this position, Capt. Godfrey L. Carden. During World War I the U.S. Coast Guard was responsible for overseeing the loading and handling of munitions leaving the Port of New York. The job of the Captain of the Port was to oversee the various anchorage areas, especially and including those anchorage areas that dealt with the loading of munitions bound for the European front. In New York this responsibility fell on Captain Carden who, as the division commander of New York, commanded the largest Coast Guard unit during the war. Carden was able to achieve this goal with a perfect safety record, no major incidents occurred in his area of responsibility and no lives were lost. This work discusses Carden's Coast Guard career, illustrating how his previous assignments led him on a path that would eventually make him the choice candidate to become the Captain of the Port of New York. The thesis also clarifies the office of the Captain of the Port and Carden's role in developing the port security program of the Coast Guard. Â

Tar kilns are found throughout the Coastal Plain of North and South Carolina, remnants of a flourishing and important industry that exported tar across the Atlantic world. Tar production is the extraction of terpene from resinous trees by burning. In North Carolina, this was accomplished by burning or heavily resinous longleaf pine, also known as lightwood, in earthen kilns. The colonists encountered a unique forest suited to this purpose. This thesis explores the background of tar production in North Carolina though the context of the ecology of the longleaf forest, describes kiln preservation criteria, and makes the case that the kilns found in Goose Creek State Park form an important historical site as the vestiges of the plantation of Thomas Boyd, member of the Proprietor administration and Solicitor-General of the colony. Â

After the Confederate surrender at Forts Hatteras and Clark in August of 1861, the Union took control of Pamlico Sound. Confederate soldiers, however, remained in control of an outpost on nearby Roanoke Island. This was their last line of defense against Union dominance of eastern North Carolina. In September 1861, Union forces set up an outpost at Chicamacomico (present-day Rodanthe on Hatteras Island). Once the Confederates discerned the Union's presence at Chicamacomico, they launched an attack to retake Pamlico Sound. Both Union and Confederate forces engaged each other on land and at sea. There were few casualties and the balance of power did not shift between the two sides. The "Chicamacomico Encounter" (also known as the "Chicamacomico Affair," and "Chicamacomico Races") has been documented in the historical record; however there has not been extensive archaeological study of the battlefield. This may be because it represents a challenge to battlefield archaeologists. The area of conflict is not only inundated with sand and vegetation, but it has also gone through drastic coastal change. Moreover, its marine battlescape is potentially expansive, and lies within exceptionally shallow water -- requiring the adaptation and combination of terrestrial and underwater archaeological surveying techniques to study it. The present study is an archaeological analysis of the battlescape which utilized the principles of KOCOA survey techniques from the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) to reconstruct battlefield behavior, analyze tactics and strategy, and in doing so considered the pros and cons of various surveying and remote sensing methodologies.

This thesis compares twelve maritime disasters from the twentieth century in order to determine why some are kept longer in public memory than others and why some are largely forgotten. No apparent correlation was found between objective statistical factors such as the size and speed of the ship, or the number of lives lost, and the strength of public memory of the ship’s loss. Detailed study of three cases (Titanic, Andrea Doria and Empress of Ireland) revealed a set of factors that help explain different levels of public memory. These include the presence of celebrities aboard sinking ships; how “impossible it is for disaster to befall a particular ship; the countries to which the ships belonged; the prior fame of the ships involved; the consequences of their sinkings on their industry’s safety regulations; the historical context of the disasters; and political repercussions. Of these, the first two factors are the most significant to explain the level of fame certain maritime disasters hold.

The knowledge that Washington was a city for all Americans and a representative of the ideals and values of this country drove the members of the Senate Park Commission to make Washington the most beautiful, the most healthful, and the most successful city in the nation. In their manufacture of a comprehensive plan for the city, they were influenced by District residents and citizens nationwide alike, and they were under an immense amount of pressure, personal, political, and professional, to present a product of unrivaled quality and expertise. This paper argues that as citizens shaped the District into their idea of an ideal capital, they revealed deep-seated values, including the importance of education, the efficacy of social activism, and the value of nature, which have become fundamental aspects of a uniquely American identity. Chapter 1 summarizes the field of Washingtoniana study and presents the sense of historical discomfort surrounding the capital's ambiguous aesthetic identity. Chapter 2 follows the rise of Americans' patriotic loyalty to their capital city in the first hundred years of its existence. Chapter 3 examines the national and local reform movements that fed the Senate Park Commission's thrust toward the ideal city and society, and Chapter 4 explores how the Plan's reform initiatives specifically altered the capital's foundational plan and legitimized its American loyalties. As a study of the capital district, this paper attempts to extrapolate meaning from the Senate Park Commission's plan for Washington in order to better understand American identity. Â

Although the United States was late to enter the First World War, the waters of the nation became a battlefield from 1917 onward. Ships operating along North Carolina's coast recurrently fell victim to the unrestricted U-boat campaign. While often forgotten in the historic record, this study follows an ongoing trend in archaeology after the conclusion of projects on the Second World War, in looking at the effects of World War One on the cultural landscape. This thesis is an historical study that compiles a record of all vessels, infrastructure, civilians, and combatants lost, damaged, or attacked in war-related incidents before, during, and after the United States entry into World War One. Primary and secondary historical sources reveal the attack and sinking locations of vessels, pinpointing the positions of potential archaeological (shipwreck) sites. This thesis also utilizes Geographical Information System (GIS) software to render a digitized projection of the battlescape. The overall objective of this thesis is to analyze a collected historical dataset and study the points of conflict between combatants off the coast of North Carolina, and to assess geospatial and temporal trends. Ultimately the main question being pursued is, "what does the geospatial and statistical analysis of trends regarding WW1-era infrastructure, combatants, and noncombatants inform us about the naval battlescape off the coast of North Carolina?"
