An Exploration of Teacher and Staff Collaboration during Elementary School Action Teams
Ingram, Heather
Gregory, Kristen H
Teacher collaboration has become an essential component of an elementary school. Student achievement, content area and pedagogy, and school relationships are some benefits that result from teacher collaboration. Five action teams (Staff Morale/Sunshine, Student Leadership, Technology, PBIS, and Clubs) are used at Stephens Elementary School to collaborate and accomplish goals for the school. This mixed methods study used a non-experimental descriptive design and examined the perspectives of 24 elementary teachers and staff regarding collaboration in their respective action teams. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from an online survey and analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, a priori coding, and open coding. Analysis revealed themes of perceptions on collaboration in action teams, benefits of collaboration, barriers to collaboration, and suggestions for future collaboration. Findings from this study revealed implications for administrators and participants regarding action teams.

Impacts of Journaling on Mathematical Performance
Sloop, Emily Evans
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact that journaling would have on students’ academic performance in mathematics. Alongside this, student perceptions on writing in the mathematics classroom were also observed through surveys. Journaling was chosen as the instrument to be given to the experimental groups. The study applied an explanatory mixed-methods research design which consisted of a pre-test and survey and post-test and survey to see what changes occurred between the two groups of students that consisted of a mixture of sixty ninth and tenth graders.

The Impacts of Web 2.0, Web 3.0, and Web 4.0 Technologies Used in Distance Education
Kimbrell, Julia
Ellis, Maureen L.
Many factors influence distance education teaching and learning experiences. This study was explored using two experiments. The first experiment examined tools of Web 2.0 technology (blogs, wikis, and podcasts), Web 3.0 technology (virtual reality), and course framework (course design, technical problems, instructor feedback, peer collaboration, and student needs). Technical problems overwhelmingly contributed the most to a negative learning experience. Results identified factors that impacted positive and negative learning experiences for distance education students. However, technical problems overwhelmingly contributed the most to a negative learning experience. The second experiment examined tools of Web technologies (Web 2.0 and Web 3.0) and instructor planning (course preparation and instructor feedback). The results identified factors that impacted positive and negative teaching experiences for distance education instructors. Inadequate training contributed the most to a negative learning experience. The future of Web technologies in distance education will one day become Web 4.0. Data suggest that developments are progressing towards 3-D printers, 3-D holographs, and the ability to control a computer with ones' thoughts. Â

Determining the best practices and strategies for website redesign in higher education
Peifer, Michelle
Kisling, Eric Lance
This study explored the best practices and strategies for website redesign in higher education. College websites experience many challenges in a digitally driven world. This study examined what role visuals, aesthetics, usability, information design, and marketing play when redesigning a website in higher education. In the absence of standardized guidelines this study investigated how users perceived visuals, organization of information, marketing, and usability. Research collected from website professionals at community colleges helped to assess patterns and trends. A focus was placed on how vast amounts of information are organized so that target audiences could easily access it, while promoting the latest initiatives or programs that are important to the institution. This study looked at how to organize data properly and place the correct visuals in the precise locations for the target users. By following simple strategies and practices any college can have a successful website redesign experience. Â

Relationship Between Test Performance of Students with Learning Disabilities and the Poverty Levels of Their Schools
Dingle, Shannon Saunders
Steinweg, Sue
The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to explore the relationship between the achievement of students with learning disabilities (LD) and the socioeconomic make-up of their schools. The research was guided by the following question: Does a relationship exist between the academic performance of students with LD and the socioeconomic distribution of students (a) at their schools and (b) in their district? The data analyzed were from two urban school districts in the same Southeastern state. The dependent variable was the passing rate (as defined by a proficient score of level III or higher) on EOG tests for students with LD, using the database found at http://report.ncsu.edu/ncpublicschools/. The independent variables were (a) poverty levels of schools in each district studied and (b) student assignment practices for all students at two large districts, labeled Distributed District and Neighborhood District for the purposes of this research.   At the district level, the difference between the average passing rate of students with LD in grades three through eight in the two districts was 9.95% (p=0.001) in math and 8.95% (p=0.0003) in reading, with higher performance in both subjects from the Distributed District which had fewer high-poverty schools as a result of their student assignment plan. At the school level in the Distributed District, the difference between the performance of the group of students with LD in high-poverty schools and low-poverty school was 18.90% in reading (p=0.0005) and 7.37% in math (p=0.36, which is the one finding that was not statistically significant). For the Neighborhood District, the difference between high-poverty and low-poverty schools was 24.10% for reading (p=0.001) and 34.37% for math (p=0.005). In each case, students with LD in the low-poverty schools outperformed their peers at higher poverty schools.   As a causal-comparative study that did not control for all possible variables, the scope of these findings is limited. However, due to the lack of current research comparing the performance of students with LD and the poverty levels at their schools, these findings do indicate a need for additional research in this area. The results also can be used to help teachers understand the challenges that may face their students with LD in high-poverty schools. Â

Effect of Contracts in Decreasing Inappropriate Behavior of Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities
Cutrell, Brandy
Evans, Chan
Students with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD) often demonstrate inappropriate behaviors in the classroom and these behaviors have shown to predict poor academic achievement, rejection from peers, and an increased chance of a student dropping out of school (Wilkinson, 2005). The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of behavior contracts to decrease the inappropriate behaviors of students with EBD in their middle school classrooms. Three male 7th and 8th grade students who have been school-identified with EBD and exhibit inappropriate behaviors in their general education classrooms were identified to participate in this research. A multiple baseline across participant design was used to implement behavior contracts for one inappropriate behavior for each participant. Using the behavior contracts, all three students demonstrated a decrease in their targeted inappropriate behavior. Behavior contracts were seen to be a very effective and an easy to use intervention for these three students. These results suggest that behavior contracts can be used with EBD students as a tool to allow their successful inclusion in the general education classroom without disrupting the learning environment. Â

The Current Status of Spirituality-Based Co-Curricular Programming by Student Affairs Practitioners in Higher Education
Caverly, Lynn
Mott, Vivian W.
The purpose of this mixed-methodologies study was to explore the current status of spirituality-based co-curricular programming by student affairs practitioners in higher education. The initial information was ascertained by a quantitative survey that was distributed to student affairs professionals. Follow-up qualitative research was conducted with four student affairs practitioners who are currently offering spirituality-based, co-curricular programs on their campuses. The outcome of the research addresses the possibilities and problems associated with providing programs and services that assist colleges and universities in meeting the increasing spirituality needs of their students.  There are several separate phenomena within the current field of higher education that validate the significance of this study. But no one has pulled together these, and additional phenomena, to explore current practices, investigate perceived needs, and examine the logistics in implementing spirituality based co-curricular programming. This research provides a "lessons learned" starting point for the student affairs professional who already accepts the need for spirituality-based co-curricular programming by accessing the experiences of practitioners in the field who have gone before them.  In addition, the research makes a contribution to the ever-increasing field of student affairs research by adding to the practical significance of student affairs. The research also provides justification for future spirituality based, co-curricular programs. Â

Trade Books in Elementary Education : Misconceptions in Science
Wiles, Heather T.
Anderson, Patricia J.
Elementary pre-service teachers are required to take only a few science courses and are not likely to have the pedagogical content knowledge necessary to choose accurate science trade books. Incorporating trade books in the content areas is a method for integrating subjects and is a common practice among elementary teachers. This study investigates the ability of pre-service elementary teachers to identify misconceptions in science trade book excerpts chosen by the researcher. Survey results were analyzed based on pre-service teachers' responses to a science content question. Often, students focused on misconceptions related to anthropomorphism when they were unsure of the science content as shown by the true/false question. Each of the teacher educators interviewed had experiences with several pre-service teachers' lack of content knowledge affecting performance in the classroom. Â

Will pacing guides paired with professional development increase the grade appropriate core curriculum content taught to students with significant challenges in Pitt County?
Stepps, Erica Sherrod
Zambone, Alana M.
Research suggests "general education classrooms" promote progress for students with severe disabilities (Wehmeyer, 2006, pp. 323). However, most students with significant challenges, which is the more appropriate term used to refer to students with severe cognitive impairments and multiple impairments, continue to be educated in substantially separate classrooms, which further limits their access to the general curriculum among many other features of an education provided in the least restrictive environment. The information sought from this study was to determine if the implementation of Pitt County's pacing guides paired with professional development would increase the grade appropriate core curriculum content taught to students with significant challenges in Pitt County. The lack of current research on approaches to improving teachers' capacity to ensure that students with significant challenges are taught general curriculum content drove the interest and potential findings of this study.  A new Low-Incidence Instructional Coach process was implemented with all low-incidence teachers. As part of this process, lesson plans were collected before and after the implementation of pacing guides and professional development. The purpose of the lesson plan analysis was to study what core curriculum content was being taught in these classrooms. The pacing guides are a tool that suggests a sequence that teachers could use to teach core curriculum content in their classrooms throughout the school year. The study examined baseline lesson plans collected at the beginning of the Low-Incidence Instructional Coach process and the lesson plans collected after the pacing guides had been implemented. There was hope that the tool, training, and continuous coaching (Low-Incidence Instructional Coach process) would help the teachers enhance the education of students with significant challenges. Â

The Questions of High School Students with Learning Disabilities About Attending College
Bouck, Christine L. Barker
Boudah, Daniel J.
Students with learning disabilities currently comprise the largest number of students with disabilities in the public schools. Despite this, very few of them go on to attend a four-year postsecondary institution. Because the numbers of students with learning disabilities in both the public schools and colleges are increasing, it is important to research effective methods of support for this population. However, in the past there has been little research done in this area. The purpose of this study was to examine the questions about college asked by high school students with learning disabilities of current college students with learning disabilities. Junior-level high school students in college preparatory curriculum assistance classes were asked to participate in this study. The questions asked by these high school students helped demonstrate the need for more direct transition support and education prior to high school graduation. The information gathered from this study can be used by high school and college personnel working with students with learning disabilities to develop curriculums and transition materials to help facilitate this change. Â

Preparedness of Career and Technical Education Students in the IT Field: Is Wake County Public School System Ignoring a Great Employment Opportunity For Their Students?
Preparedness of Career and Technical Education Students in the IT Field : Is Wake County Public School System Optimally Capitalizing on Local Resources?
Hill, Andrew Hopkins
Ellis, Maureen L.
Information Technology is one of the fastest growing fields in regards to career vacancies, so why is the Wake County Public School System not taking advantage of an opportunity to prepare their students for these in-demand jobs? The Wake County Public School System's Career and Technical Education high school programs reach over 40,000 students a semester. Only a small portion of that population is pursuing a course of instruction that prepares for employment opportunities in the Information Technology field. The job market for Wake County and the surrounding counties is filled with Information Technology opportunities, so why isn't Wake County Public School System preparing their students to fill the vacancies?  The goal of Career and Technical Education is to prepare students for high paying, highly skilled, and highly-demanded career possibilities. Information Technology is one field that fits this description. CTE has shown the importance of the field by creating a branch aptly named Business and Information Technology Education, but how much of this department is actually geared toward the IT field?  The county enrollment practices are a mismatch for the current available jobs in the local area. The Wake County Public School System has a very small portion of students who enroll in their Information Technology courses even though it is one of the bigger needs in the job market. In some cases school are not offering any IT courses for the students, which is a large population of students who are never extended the opportunity to jump into a field within which they would have a great chance to become employed.  With a plethora of IT companies that exist in the Triangle Area it seems that the Wake County Public School System would be able to work with employers to help develop a program that would effectively provide skilled employees for the businesses. The companies lack of involvement in the IT area of Wake County Public School System's BITE department shows disconnect between the employers and the school system. How feasible is it for the school system to create their own curricula that will prepare their students for these local and in demand job opportunities?  Some of the IT curricula dates back as far as 1997. Most of the curricula were created within a year of 2005. Information Technology is an ever changing field and the curricula must address the changes or it is not meeting the needs of its students. The curriculum is not up-to-date enough to provide the students with a relevant education in the field.  This research takes a look at solutions to this problem. The issues that limit Wake County Career and Technology will be discussed. Â

New Technologies in the Public Library
Chirico, Jessica, L.
Munde, Gail
The nature of the public library is evolving with the continuous rise of new technologies. The purpose of this research is to analyze the current usage of new technologies in the Sheppard Memorial public library system in Pitt County, North Carolina, and evaluate how the library can use Internet-related services and new technologies to improve ties with the community and accommodate the evolving needs of patrons. The study consists of a literature review examining services and technologies used by public libraries and an awareness and usage assessment survey of users of the Sheppard Memorial Library and its branches. The survey assesses how well the library has communicated the Internet-related services and new technologies that it offers to its patrons and how they in turn take advantage of the services offered. By analyzing the data, the research allows for conclusions to be formed on how much patrons are taking advantage of provided technology resources and whether revision is needed on the library's part.

Student Grouping in Secondary Education
Sherrod, Lynn
Ellis, Maureen L.
How to group students in secondary education in order to meet the rigorous state academic standards is a topic of concern in the educational arena. Because of the variations in student academic abilities, we must realize the challenges facing educators. The extent of how to group and when to group is still an issue that is debated among educators. There are legal concerns and issues about the effects of grouping on academic and non-academic outcomes for the students. The practice of grouping has raised arguments about race, class and equity. Laws have been established to provide equal and fair education for all students. This study provides historical viewpoints and expert viewpoints about grouping in secondary education and provides data from a small case study to compare and contrast homogeneous grouping and heterogeneous grouping in middle school. Because of the variations in student academic abilities, it is important to identify the challenges facing educators. This study will examine the types of student grouping available to teachers and describe which type is most effective to achieve the highest level of student learning.

Universal Design for Learning : Access to the General Curriculum for Students with Severe Cognitive Disabilities
Strickland, Anna
King, Laura H.
Students with significant cognitive disabilities need to have access to the general curriculum. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1997 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 have made provisions to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate and progress in the general curriculum, including students with significant cognitive disabilities. One way to promote access to the general curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities is through Universal Design for Learning(UDL). The research design for this study was a single-subject design using an ABA approach with both quantitative and qualitative components. This study used the Universal Design for Learning principle of representation specially graphic supports to promote access to the general curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities. The study took place in a seventh grade regular education English language arts classroom. The participants in the study include one regular education teacher, one Intellectually Disabled Moderate student, and three Intellectually Disabled Severe students. Data collection was done through a pre and post assessment with the teacher participant, task analysis of the instruction, and student engagement recording chart. This study provides both general and special education teachers with knowledge on how to implement UDL and how to effectively collaborate with one another to ensure access and success to all students. Â

The Incorporation of Reading and Writing in the Middle Grades Math Classroom
Smith, Mary Allison
Carson, Jamin
Through observations during my training in teacher education, I have noticed a general student distaste, accompanied by lower achievement, in mathematics word problems. Among closer investigation, I noticed that this phenomenon was only a portion of a more general lack in achievement involving mathematical literacy. As a student-teacher, I decided to explore solutions to this problem, in hopes of identifying a strategic way to incorporate mathematical literacy into my lessons.
By planning a full year of the math curriculum, I have identified what I feel to be an appropriate balance of activities involving mathematical literacy. The product of this exploration is a portfolio of lessons that stresses mathematical literacy throughout every standard of the curriculum. This portfolio is accompanied by a written analysis of my initial research, my proposal of four general strategies for incorporating mathematical literacy into the curriculum, and the rationale for the choices that I made in my lesson planning.

TEACHER AS RESEARCHER: A CASE STUDY ON MULTIMODAL COMMUNICATION INTERVENTION IN THE SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOM
Engeman, Katherine S.
Smith-Canter, Lora Lee
Functional communication has always been a challenge for individuals with severe intellectual disabilities and speech and language impairments, yet it is one of the most important aspects of our daily life as humans. It is what we use to convey our most basic wants and needs, transfer information, and interact socially with one another. Communication systems increase student independence which in turn decreases the amount of behavioral problems, mainly tantrums and self-injurious behaviors, which are usually present when students do not have an effective mode of communication (Sigafoos, Arthur-Kelly, &Butterfield, 2006). In the past few decades, great strides have been made in improving the communication opportunities for individuals with communication barriers and their communication partners. There has been an increase in popularity of both high tech and low-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, which give these individuals an effective mode of communication. These can be anything from a picture card exchange to request an item, to a high tech digitized speech device with dynamic screen displays. This is a case study about the implementation of a multi-modal communication system and it's effect on an individual learner's expressive speech. The study is designed as action research done by a teacher in a special education classroom. Data is collected during communication activities, which are embedded into academic instruction and during the creation of contrived situations that facilitate the development of the learner's communicative skills. This paper presents Action Research as a viable and practical research methodology by chronicling one special educator's experience in implementing an action research study.

Interest, Challenge, Choice, and Enjoyment for the Gifted Learner
Blanchard, Katherine A.
Housand, Brian C.
Gifted learners are engaged in many classroom settings that each offer something different. This study investigated how gifted learners perceive interest, challenge, choice, and enjoyment across three classroom settings: their regular classrooms, gifted classrooms, and a summer enrichment camp classroom. Through the use of the My Class Activities survey developed by Gentry and Gable (2001), students reflected on the elements they experienced in these three educational settings. These surveys were then analyzed to determine the discrepancies between each educational setting and the levels of interest, challenge, choice, and enjoyment in each. After ANOVA and MANOVA tests were run, it was found that statistically significant differences existed between the three educational settings. In addition, students experienced differing levels of interest, challenge, choice, and enjoyment amongst their classroom settings. Â
