Abstract
Nursing education can be presented in various modalities to create change within the nursing population successfully. This project utilizes presentations, posters, and in-person coaching to increase the consistent use of warm compresses while pushing with patients. This was done to decrease the rate of third- and fourth-degree lacerations at one facility within a large, high-risk hospital system. The education provided for the nurses was built on proven evidence-based practices that are known to prevent perineal trauma. Warm compresses were specifically addressed at this facility due to a lack of previous education on this topic. During implementation, supplies, including warm compresses and grapeseed oil for perineal massage, were continually stocked in labor rooms for convenient access during deliveries. The findings from this project show an increased use of warm compresses after education and live in-person coaching. 100% of the nurses who completed the post-survey found this project and the increased availability of supplies helpful.
