Preoperative Total Knee Arthroplasty Education: Preparing Patients During the Outpatient Visit

Abstract

Preoperative education is a critical part of a patient’s surgical journey. Preoperative education improves patient engagement and outcomes, particularly for total knee or hip arthroplasty patients. This project aimed to assess the current preoperative educational curricula and implement a standardized preoperative educational session for patients and caregivers. Pre- and post-surveys were used to measure patient and caregiver outcomes from the educational intervention. Tailored education addressing patient needs is essential for successful outcomes. Despite challenges such as technical issues and communication gaps, the project improved patient and caregiver preparation for surgery and recovery, leading to increased role clarity and opportunities for questions. Collaborative relationships between stakeholders and interprofessional collaboration were key to the program's success. Continued development of this educational model can continue to improve patient and caregiver education, address communication gaps, and expand the program to other procedures.
