dc.description.abstract | To create a meaningful and impactful project for the dance community, one must be in touch with their creative mind, which means letting your raw emotions take the forefront and logic or rationale on the back burner. I have always been interested in the reason behind “why” a piece impacts an audience. Is it a strategic choreographic process that creates “great” dance pieces? Is it the expertise of the choreographer? These questions puzzled me and challenged me to dive deep into what about certain pieces making me want to go back and watch them over and over again. I realized that the pieces that my mind was drawn to were pieces that were raw and emotive. Pieces that told a story that I could relate to and of something that considers the human condition. I began to challenge myself to value being raw and expressive in my creative process when working privately to prepare for each rehearsal and teaching this material to my casts in the same raw, intimate fashion that I allowed my mind to wander in private. Throughout my junior composition works, my senior solo, and my final senior choreographic project, my main objective was to make works about things that are pertinent in my life and that I could channel raw, unprocessed feelings into tangible, genuine movement practices. | |
