From Assumption to Instruction: Never assume that just because a student is in college, graduate school, or even professional school, they know how to study. As academic specialists at the ECU School of Dental Medicine, we have found that it is often best to start at the beginning—by explicitly teaching study techniques and communication skills. This requires us to teach skills we frequently assume students already possess. While this approach takes time and effort, it is an investment worth making. By helping students establish a strong foundation of essential skills, we support their success not only in school, but beyond—ultimately closing the study skills gap. When we do this, we teach students the how, not just the what, and provide the support they need to succeed.
