| dc.description.abstract | Though patients receive information about proper pre-surgical fasting verbally and in their surgical information packet, most still fast from midnight. Evidence shows that combining written and visual education significantly improves patients’ retention of health information. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a multi-modal educational intervention consisting of a dedicated patient information sheet paired with a QR code-linked video to encourage elective surgical patients to consume clear liquids up to three hours prior to their surgery time. The project took place at an outpatient surgery center and included 108 patients. The patients received an information sheet that had a QR code-linked video encouraging them to drink clear liquids. Engagement was measured using a pre- and post-operative questionnaire. 40% of patients viewed the video while 97% stated they received the pamphlet. 36% consumed measurable amounts of clear liquids and 28% drank sips of water. There were zero incidences of pulmonary aspiration, surgery cancellations or delays related to fasting status. The project reinforces the research that states these guidelines can be encouraged while maintaining patient safety and surgical schedule efficiency. | |
