Obesity has become a common health issue that impacts patients throughout their life span, including the pediatric population. A literature review was conducted to identify causes and best evidence-based practices for treating and preventing obesity in pediatric populations, leading to the question of which approach should be developed to address pediatric obesity. Based on the findings, an evidence-based policy and procedure was developed and implemented in a rural health care facility with a concern for its obese pediatric population. The policy and procedure served as a guide for healthcare providers involved in identifying, assessing, and treating weight-associated issues in the pediatric population. A DNP project was developed to determine the effectiveness of implementing the policy and procedure. It focused on how well the healthcare workers could follow the designated job duties defined in the policy and procedure. The project also determined if the policy and procedure would positively impact healthcare providers, practice, and patients. Outcomes using the Plan-Do-Study-Act model showed that an evidenced-based policy and procedure could be easily implemented for all healthcare roles involved in the care of obese pediatric patients. It was also determined that implementing a policy and procedure positively impacts patients, providers, and healthcare settings. Overall, the findings suggest that an evidence-based framework for identifying and treating obesity in childhood can positively impact patients throughout their lifespans.en_US
