dc.description.abstractInfants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are at increased risk for neurodevelopmental deficits and delays. Purposeful language exposure, such as reading aloud in the NICU can help offset language delays commonly seen among this patient population and improve long-term health and outcomes. Evidence supports promoting infant-directed speech through singing, talking, and reading starting at birth. Therefore, creating a literacy-rich environment in the NICU setting is essential for this at-risk patient population. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project group partnered with the Reach Out and Read (ROR) organization to improve the implementation and utilization of their book program at active and future NICU sites. Students used web-based surveys to collect data and make evidence-based recommendations to help ROR adjust the current delivery model to increase program implementation, utilization, and future expansion at acute care inpatient sites.en_US
