Empowering Anesthesia Providers with Evidence-Based Tools for Alpha-Gal Syndrome

Abstract

Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an emerging allergic condition associated with significant perioperative safety risks, particularly in regions with high prevalence such as eastern North Carolina. This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of an evidence-based educational intervention and medication reference tool on anesthesia providers’ knowledge, confidence, and preparedness in caring for patients with AGS. Baseline assessment revealed substantial knowledge gaps regarding AGS prevalence, medication-related risks, and perioperative management. Following implementation, approximately 90% of participants reported moderate-to-significant improvements in AGS knowledge, more than 70% reported moderate-to-high confidence in managing patients with AGS, and 95% recommended the clinical reference tool for practice. Findings demonstrate that targeted education combined with point-of-care decision-support resources can enhance provider preparedness and support safer perioperative care for patients with AGS.
