This paper reviews the major forces that led to a new climate of assessment in higher education, some of the instruments commonly used to assess undergraduate student learning and growth, and the programs through which results are communicated to prospective students, their parents, lawmakers, and other constituents. The impact of increased emphasis on assessment on academic libraries and the role those libraries can play in institutional assessment activities is also discussed.en_US
