Abstract

Cardiovascular disease, the leading modifiable cause of death in the United States, is directly impacted by dyslipidemia.  Fortunately, dyslipidemia can be treated and reduced with lifestyle modifications such as nutritional counseling.  The current literature supports the hypothesis that nutritional counseling has a direct reduction on dyslipidemia and, consequently, cardiovascular disease.  Neuman's theory provides a foundation and holistic approach to the primary prevention of dyslipidemia.  The purpose of this DNP project was to determine what nutritional modifications uninsured patients are willing to undertake to reduce dyslipidemia. The Heart Healthy Survey produced results indicating this patient population needs further education regarding snacks and choices when eating out.
