The current study examines the impact of body image on sexually competent (responsible) behaviors within an emerging adult population utilizing a feminist perspective of Symbolic Interaction theory. The sample consisted of 115 women with a mean age of 21.2 years old, enrolled at universities in the Midwest (n=57) and Southeast (n=58). Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression. Results indicate that relationship status was the strongest predictor of sexual competence with some additional variation explained by socioeconomic status. Future education efforts involving emerging adults may benefit from understanding how to approach the topic of sexual competence regarding relationship status.  en_US
