    Un análisis de los personajes de Eva Luna desde una perspectiva feminista

    The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Isabel Allende's novel Eva Luna, and the respective characters from an intersectional feminist perspective. The first chapter will analyze the eponymous protagonist of the novel, Eva Luna. This section will focus on examining the common themes and subgenres frequently attributed to the novel and this character through a feminist lens. More specifically, this section will analyze the use of picaresque and Bildungsroman literary elements to amplify the feminist message of the novel. The second chapter will focus on an important secondary character Mimi, previously known as Melecio, and analyze the presence of a trans woman as a leading character in a major Latin American novel. The third and final chapter of this thesis will center around the primary masculine characters of the novel: Huberto Naranjo, Riad Halabi, and Rolf Karle. The analysis of these characters will focus on the idea of machismo and the spectrum of "machismo-feminismo" seen within various Latin American societies through the lens of hegemonic masculinity.

    THE TRAINING AND DECISIONS OF KING LEONIDAS: THE INFLUENCES BEHIND THE LEADER

    The Battle of Thermopylae produced unique circumstances that required King Leonidas of Sparta to make a series of controversial decisions. Scholars debate what purpose it served for him to cling to his position when it had apparently become untenable.An explanation lies in the strictly controlled militarized society and structured social system in which Leonidas was raised. He participated in the unique educational system of Sparta called the agōgē that had practices dedicated to the development of elite warriors. The unique practices of the agōgē were extremely successful in developing a belief system for the participants which they would maintain throughout life and which would affect all of their decisions.

    An Exploration of Conformity to Medieval Male and Female Roles in the Chronicle of Alfonso X

    Gender is constructed by the society in which one lives, and due to this notion, it is essential to research and analyze the implications of being male or female during specific time periods. The Middle Ages is often labeled as a patriarchal society because of the rigid roles that assigned men to the public sphere, and women to the private. Males dominated feudal society, which was defined by the three orders of society (those who pray, fight, and work). Men were expected to exude dominance in order to be considered masculine, in terms of women, war, and authority. Though we know that women intervened within these orders of society, they were undoubtedly restricted to the private sphere and left out of the hierarchy. Instead, women were confined to the roles of mother, widow, or virgin. My project focuses on the royal sphere of medieval society, exploring whether or not kings and queens were restricted to the same, stringent roles that the Middle Ages was centered around. By analyzing the Chronicle of Alfonso X, I look at how male and female identities are represented. In order to portray these historical figures as an ideal male or female the chronicler explores what signified the archetypical mold of each gender to determine whether or not Alfonso X and Queen Violante did in fact conform to the traditional norms of medieval masculinity and femininity. Most importantly, it is vital to my research to look at the bias of the narrator of the chronicle and how his status and purpose in writing Alfonso's chronicle affected how the characters are delineated.
