The United States Revenue Cutter Bear (1874-1963) was a British built barkentine-rigged screw steamer that had a 90-year career serving as a sealer, United States Revenue Cutter, Antarctic explorer, movie star, and a ship museum. During this storied career, Bear underwent numerous technological changes to better serve the missions for which it was used. The purpose of this research is to explore these adaptations and create detailed virtual models that highlight the changes made to the vessel. Once completed, these models will be analyzed using a behavioral archaeological approach to examine Bear within its systemic context. In doing this, the technological, economic, cultural, political, and institutional influences that factored into the construction and modifications of Bear over the course of its life will be better understood.
