Abstract
Background: The growing epidemic of obesity continues to surge among African American women. African American accounts for the highest rates of obesity across all demographics in the United States of America. Obesity is not only linked to an increase in disease and financial burden but is heavily associated with chronic stress. Acculturative and socioeconomic stress specific to the experiences of African American women may contribute to the onset and maintenance of obesity. Therefore, it is paramount to establish a binge eating support group tailored to meet the distinctive needs of African American women who are obese and report binge eating episodes.
