This thesis examines the rise and fall of the shore whaling industry in Monterey Bay, California, from its inception in the mid-19th century to its brief resurgence in the early 20th century, through the lens of maritime archaeology and industrial archaeology. By analyzing the historical and archaeological evidence from three prominent whaling sites - Monterey, Point Lobos, and Moss Landing - this study sheds light on the complex interplay of environmental, technological, and cultural factors that shaped the development and decline of this coastal industry. Through a detailed examination of historical records, material remains, and the cultural landscape, the thesis explores key aspects of the Monterey Bay shore whaling industry, including site selection criteria, technological adaptations, and the industry's impact on local communities. By situating the Monterey Bay shore whaling industry within broader regional and global contexts, this thesis contributes to our understanding of the complex dynamics of coastal resource exploitation and the lasting impacts of maritime industries on the cultural heritage as part of a broader maritime industrial landscape.
